Welcome to Ås!

Welcome to Norway's most beautiful campus with the best student community in the country!

At the heart of the student life stands Studentsamfunnet i Ås, which has been a gathering place for students since 1984, making it one of the oldest of its kind in Norway. The house and the organization boast a rich and well-documented history. This has resulted in two history books about the student life in Ås: the first was published for the 100th anniversary in 1964, and the second for the 150th anniversary in 2014. The book from the 100th anniversary can be read in full on the National Library's website.

We hope you have an amazing time at NMBU and in Ås! Below, we have gathered practical information about the culture and student life in Ås.

Studentsamfunnet in Ås

Samfunnet is for and by the students in Ås. It is the students' own organization, providing the framework for most of the social activities happening among students in Ås. With over 2,000 members, it is one of Norway's most active and vibrant student communities! Concerts, parties, quizzes, and community meetings are just a few of the events that take place at Samfunnet.

UKA i Ås

UKA i Ås is Norway's longest cultural festival, organized for the entire student body at NMBU as well as the local community in Ås. In October 2024, the festival will celebrate its 100th anniversary. UKA i Ås is created through volunteer efforts by over 1,200 students from the Norwegian University of Life Sciences (NMBU).

The tradition of UKA i Ås dates back to the 1890s when the first student revue was performed at the Higher Agricultural School in Ås. The 2024 edition of UKA i Ås will mark the 52nd UKA since the festival's official inception in 1924, celebrating its 100th year.

UKA offers activities such as the UKErevyen, concerts, sports and charity events, themed bars organized by student associations, quizzes, company days, and much more—there’s something happening every day for everyone.

Tuntreet

Tuntreet is a student newspaper established in 1946 at the Norwegian University of Life Sciences (NMBU).

It serves as a platform for Studentsamfunnet i Ås and is run entirely on a volunteer basis. Paper editions are published every three weeks during the semester, with additional content available online.

The editorial team consists of two elected editors, chosen at the general assembly of Studentsamfunnet each semester, alongside volunteer students working within various committees as committee leaders, members, or freelancers.

The Business Committee

(Næringslivsutvalget - NU) at NMBU acts as a bridge between NMBU students and the business world. NU operates under Studentsamfunnet i Ås and represents all NMBU students. It works to connect students with companies and vice versa by organizing Career Day events in both spring and fall, as well as other career-related activities. NU also coordinates stands and sponsorships at Samfunnet.

The board of NU consists of six voting members and an incoming Career Day coordinator.

Samfunnsbygningen

The Samfunnsbygningen is centrally located on campus at Olav Moens Plass 1.

This versatile building features three bar areas and three concert venues, in addition to a coffee shop called "Klubben."

The building also includes meeting rooms and multi-purpose spaces that are regularly used for choir rehearsals, association meetings, and other activities. Its unique functionalist architectural style has earned it protected status from the National Heritage Board.

Hans Hovenhet Hestehoven

Since 1924, Hans Hovenhet Hestehoven has been the high protector of Studentsamfunnet i Ås.

The name of the order was established in 1929. At Ås, students chose a small part of the horse's outer anatomy, giving the name a fitting touch of weed biology. It was appropriate then and remains so today.
